Okay, I think I’ve got a definitive “position paper” on sex and porn that’s sloooowly coming together in my head. It started with this rant of a couple of years ago:
I went to lunch with a few friends the other day, and as we were talking, the conversation began to focus on raising children. One in our group (a school teacher) mentioned that, in the previous school year, one of her sixth-graders had printed out a few “graphic” images from the internet to bring to school.
The thing about this entire conversation that really bugged me was that another guy, in regards to the male fascination with porn, commented that “boys will be boys,” and everyone else at the table accepted this as a fact! Is this true? Do young men in our society have no choice but to be sucked into a depravity that treats women as little more than objects to satisfy our lust? What message does this send to all of the young women out there? I don’t have any figures right off hand, but I’ve heard that the number of women addicted to sex/porn is increasing rather rapidly; does this mean women are accepting their role in our porn-based society?
Is some form of spirituality the answer? Well, as someone who became a Christian at the age of 11 and a porn addict right around the age of 16, I can honestly say that there’s more to the equation than simple religion. As much as I hate to say it, most people that would probably be grouped in as part of the “Body of Messiah” are lazy with their faith; there’s simply no way to tell them apart from everyone else.
Well, then, what’s the answer?
To be continued. . .
Needless to say, the continuation never occurred. However, I did submit this writing late last year: http://insane-in-the-brain.blogspot.com/2005/11/love-sex-masturbation-porn.html
Not all that refined, but closer to a proper answer. I think the final piece rests in my question above about women “accepting their role in our porn-based society.” This is something that hit me when a young lady was hired at my place of employment a few years back who wore her bisexuality as a badge of honor, and was very confused when I didn’t find it “hot” that she had sex with both genders.
This piece of the puzzle has been the hardest for me to work through as, let’s face it, women make no sense to me. However, I think I’m gonna tackle this one very soon.
If you have any input before I get going, feel free to offer it up.
